From 1902 - 1957 there was a strict prohibition in the Gore District. No alcohol could be purchased or sold within the District boundaries. So of course there were many locals who went went around the prohibition and created their own moonshine. The Hokonui Moonshine Museum pays tribute to this unique local history and the legend behind the bootleg whiskey.
